🏛️ Academics Beyond HCC

Schools I'm looking at once I finish up at HCC

Student coding on a computer

University of South Florida (USF)

Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity

Bellini College of Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity and Computing

Program 1

USF is at the top of my list, mostly because it's right here in Tampa so the transition from HCC would be smooth. They just launched the Bellini College of AI, Cybersecurity and Computing, which tells you they're serious about this field. What really caught my attention is that they've got Cyber Florida on campus — it's a state-funded research center where students can actually get involved in real cybersecurity projects. The program digs into network defense, ethical hacking, digital forensics, and security policy. Plus, the NSA has designated USF as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense, so you know the program carries weight with employers.

Additional Information:

  • Location: Tampa, FL (close to HCC for easy transfer)
  • NSA/DHS designated Center of Academic Excellence
  • Strong industry partnerships with local defense contractors
  • Articulation agreement with HCC for seamless credit transfer

University of Central Florida (UCF)

B.S. in Information Technology — Accelerated BS to Cyber Security & Privacy MS Track

College of Engineering and Computer Science

Program 2

What's cool about UCF is they have this accelerated track where you can knock out both a bachelor's in IT and a master's in Cyber Security and Privacy faster than doing them separately. That's a big deal if you want to get into the workforce with a graduate degree without spending six or seven years in school. They go deep into cryptography, network security architecture, and privacy engineering. UCF also runs a Cyber Defense and Security Lab where students work on real research projects, and their program is ranked as one of the best in the country.

Additional Information:

  • Location: Orlando, FL
  • Accelerated 5-year BS + MS option
  • One of the largest IT programs in the Southeast
  • $212.28 per credit hour (in-state)

Florida International University (FIU)

Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity

College of Engineering and Computing

Program 3

FIU stands out to me for a couple of reasons. First, their cybersecurity degree is ranked as one of the most affordable in the entire country, which matters a lot when you're paying for school. But it's not just cheap — the program is genuinely strong. You cover network security, cryptography, ethical hacking, and digital forensics, and they set you up to go after industry certs like CompTIA Security+, CISSP, and CEH. They also have a dedicated Cybersecurity@FIU research hub, and being in Miami puts you close to a growing tech scene in South Florida.

Additional Information:

  • Location: Miami, FL
  • Ranked #22 Most Affordable Cybersecurity Degree in the US
  • Dedicated Cybersecurity@FIU research hub
  • Strong connections to South Florida's growing tech sector
